al-qaeda did it?
29/12/2007benazir bhutto’s assassination was the second time someone attempted to take her life. the first time, a car bomb, seriously wounded her. however, she survived it and battled on for democracy in pakistan. actually, i wasn’t going to rant about her murder, until i saw this story on the bbc. the pakistani government is blaming al-qaeda for the assassination. personally, i find this incredibly unlikely. it seems that pakistan has learned from america, in blaming the ‘boogey man’ for all their evil crimes. al-qaeda only rose to prominence because they were blamed for 9/11. some experts believe that al-qaeda didn’t actually exist, until it was created as a scapegoat for terrorist attacks. the fact that al-qaeda isn’t to blame, in my mind, is proof that the pakistani government is behind ms bhutto’s killing.
benazir’s death is a sad day. but i personally think it was inevitable that something would happen to her. in a country where women have few rights, the lone female voice calling for democracy and equality would one day be silenced. it was only just a matter of time. the real tragedy is that her death will be ignored. the real conspirators will not be caught, the international community will put no pressure on pakistan to change, and nothing good will come of her death. benazir was martyred, but the bad guys have won … because nobody will take up her call.
