travel diary — day 230

day 226 — after breakfast i took the bus into the city and found myself in the queen street mall. it’s such a long time since i’ve been there, and i was surprised how little the mall had changed. i wandered around for a while looking at the shop windows and contemplating a beer at jimmy’s — one of the famous old open air restaurants in the lower mall.

i didn’t have the beer, instead i walked back to the top of the mall and across to the river. i had a coffee and then walked over the bridge to southbank. southbank has always been one of my favourite places in brisbane. it’s brissie’s cultural heart, being home to the lyric theatre (including the cremorne theatre and the playhouse), the queensland museum, the state library, the gallery of modern art, and the big new brisbane wheel (like the london eye, but smaller).

i strolled along southbank, taking photos here and there. i walked through the museum and had a quick look around the art gallery. i saw a few nice paintings, took some photos of people walking through the building, and headed out.

i had another coffee at the library before catching the bus back home.

day 227 — today was a day spent on my bum, at craig’s house, catching up on blogging and editing photos from the wedding.

day 228 — i stayed home and finished the work from yesterday. when craig got home we did some shopping. when we returned we listened to the australia vs oman game — which the abc was streaming live online. i really hate it that all the good sport is on pay tv … i hope the government’s current re-evaluation of the guidelines results in all major sporting events being returned to free-to-air.

day 229 — after craig finished work we drove to kangaroo point for some night photography. craig drove and i navigated. we got lost and ended up in the middle of the city. it’s neither of our faults, brisbane city roads are ridiculous to navigate. many of the city centre roads are one way, meaning cars have to go around the block (or usually, 2–3 blocks) if they miss their turn.

eventually we found the right road and parked next to the brisbane river. it was a different place to where craig was hoping to go, but it turned out to be better. there was a bicyle and walking path all the way along the river and up to the storey bridge. there was a large cliff behind us and at night it was lit up by floodlights and climbers were working their way up and down the cliff face. the climbing club had at least 50 people there, all climbing or belaying. it looked really cool under the floodlights, with huge black shadows being thrown around everywhere.

we took some photos and kept walking towards the storey bridge, where we had a better view of the city over the river. we took more photos, watched the river ferries ply back and forth, and enjoyed the great weather.

happy with our photos, we headed home.

day 230 — yet another lazy day spent at home, doing nothing. lol
