travel diary — day 240

day 236 — i spent the day at craig’s house, not doing much.

day 237 — i spent the day at craig’s house doing work online. after he returned from work, we drove out to craig’s sister’s house for a little mexican fiesta. we ate tacos (tacos rule!) and some heavily concentrated margaritas. feeling happy and a little pissy, we settled in to watch davinci code on tv. i watched, while craig and megan ridiculed. i crashed on the couch.

day 238 — craig and i had promised to concrete megan’s driveway. we’d slept at megan’s house so that we could get an early start. craig and i spent the morning digging out the driveway and preparing it for the concrete. craig’s father and his mate helped us out. it was hot and freaking hard work. after finishing, we had lunch and then i had a quick shower.

craig and i then drove back into the city to watch the queensland bulls vs western australian warriors (that’s cricket, btw). we bought some overpriced food and got some seats. the game was good but we gave up after two rain delays threatened to wash the game out. inyoung picked us up and we drove home. i was absolutely buggered after the day’s work and crashed … it turns out that the cricket managed to get going again and queensland won.

day 239 — in the morning we went for a drive across town to pick up some magazines. at the same time, i did some looking around for tickets to alice springs. craig and i had planned to go to alice together and see uluru. then, he’d return to brisbane and i’d head north to darwin for the jump to indonesia. flights were going to be ridiculously expensive and we begrudgingly canceled the trip. i’d fly to alice on my own …

day 240 — after craig went to work i bussed into the queen street mall. on a whim i stopped into a sunglasses store to see if i could get my shades fixed. one of the screws had threaded itself and wouldn’t tighten at all, making the sunglasses unwearable.

the girl at the store was incredibly helpful … almost too helpful! she couldn’t fix the screw either, so she offered to sell me a set of identical frames for 25% of the ticket price (these are ray ban sunglasses, btw). i jumped at the offer and snagged a new set of frames for $50 (originally $200). she pulled the lenses out of the frames, cleaned my lenses and screwed them into the new frames. i casually asked why she could give me 75% off and she said that she’d write it off as repairs. then i asked about the lenses she’d taken out of the frames. the girl told me that they couldn’t be sold, and she gave the lenses to me as well. so, in reality, she gave me the complete sunglasses (including the ray ban case) at a quarter of the sale price.

davey was happy!

i had lunch in the mall and walked to the brisbane river, crossing over to southbank. i wandered around for a while, bought some tickets to see qpac’s production of ‘the crucible’, and caught the bus home.
